Firefighter Combat Challenge – The history of the world’s toughest firefighting competition
As early as 1974, work began on developing a realistic physical test for firefighters designed to replicate the extreme demands of everyday operational duties. Following intensive research and numerous test series, a standardised test was created in 1976 that simulates the five most common tasks during a fire operation:
- Climbing stairs with equipment
- Pulling up a hose using a rope
- Working with a hammer strike simulator (Keiser Force Machine)
- Pulling a filled hose
- Rescuing a dummy – representing the rescue of a person
These tasks must be completed whilst wearing full firefighter protective gear and with a breathing apparatus connected – a real test of physical strength and endurance.
From operational simulation to firefighting competition
In 1991, the realistic stress test became an international competition: the Firefighter Combat Challenge was born. Just one year later, seven events took place in the USA – the start of a global success story. Today, around 30 Firefighter Challenges are held annually in the United States, including the US Championships and World Championships.
The Firefighter Challenge in Europe and Germany
Europe, too, quickly took notice of this unique firefighting competition. The first challenges were organised at US airbases in Europe – initially mostly as internal events among military fire brigades. In Germany, the first public event took place in 2007: the Berlin Firefighter Challenge at Potsdamer Platz, with 76 participants.
Since then, the Firefighter Combat Challenge has developed rapidly in Germany. In 2011, over 900 firefighters from seven nations took part in two competitions in Dortmund and Berlin. The Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA) competitions are also gaining popularity: at the open German championships in Mönchengladbach in June 2016, nearly 300 athletes from several countries competed.
Conclusion
The Firefighter Combat Challenge is now an internationally recognised fire service competition that tests strength, endurance, technique and team spirit – and comes closer than any other test to the real-life stresses of firefighting operations. Whether in the USA, Europe or Germany: the community is growing – and with it, enthusiasm for this extraordinary sport.
